Dr. Tom Crawford

Thomas W. Crawford (Tom) is Professor and Chair of Geography at Virginia Tech. Before joining Virginia Tech, he spent 11 years at East Carolina University, where he developed longstanding connections with geography across the Southeast. His research focuses on human-environment interactions, geospatial analysis, coastal hazards, and sustainability. A SEDAAG member for more than two decades, Crawford has served as an elected North Carolina State Representative (2012–2014) and as a member of the SEDAAG Nominating Committee (2005–2006). His broader professional service includes elected leadership in the Association of American Geographers as Academic Councilor for the GIS Specialty Group and Secretary/Treasurer of the Coastal and Marine Specialty Group. He served for three years on the AAG’s Justice, Diversity and Inclusion Committee, contributing to the AAG’s JEDI strategic plan and other diversity and inclusion initiatives. He served as the Secretary/Treasurer (2007-
2009) and President (2009-2011) of the North Carolina Geographical Society. He has organized, chaired, and moderated numerous sessions at SEDAAG and AAG meetings. As a department chair, Crawford has extensive experience developing academic programs, supporting faculty and students, and organizing complex academic activities. He would be pleased to bring this experience back to SEDAAG in service of its members and annual meeting.
