Deepak Mishra, PhD
Professor & Associate Head
Director, Small Satellite Research Lab
Department of Geography
University of Georgia

Deepak Mishra is a Professor of Geography and Associate Department Head in the Department of Geography at the University of Georgia. Deepak’s research expertise is in the area of application of geospatial science to monitor coastal environments particularly vegetation and water resources in the southeastern U.S. His work has been published in a range of leading journals, and is widely-cited in geography and related disciplines. Deepak served as the coeditor of Southeastern Geographer (SEG) for 4 years, from 2016 to 2019. In those four years, Co-Editors Hilda Kurtz and Deepak Mishra brought several key changes to how the journal operates. Deepak was instrumental in negotiating a deal with Manuscript Central’s ScholarOne which resulted in the conversion from email submissions to a web interface. This change greatly streamlined the review process and SEG subsequently assigned by Thomson Reuters to an Emerging Citations Index, one step closer to obtaining an Impact Factor. Deepak now serves as a member of the editorial board of SEG. Deepak has been a member of AAG, Remote Sensing Specialty Group (RSSG), and Coastal and Marine Specialty Group since 2005. He served as the Director of the RSSG from 2009 to 2011 when the group had approximately 800 members. He has served on the Senior Advisory Panel for the Geography and Spatial Sciences Program of the National Science Foundation for 3 years. He has been a regular reviewer for several NASA programs, National Academy of Sciences Gulf program, and Belgian, Dutch, Estonian, British, New Zealand, and Brazilian government remote sensing grant programs. He currently serves as an occasional reviewer for more than 35 journals, Associate Editor of ISPRS Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing Journal, and Section Editor-in-Chief of MDPI’s Remote Sensing Letter. He received the SEDAAG’s Research Honors Award in 2011 Pensacola meeting, and Excellence in Service Award in 2019 Wilmington meeting.
