Dr. Weiming Hu

Weiming Hu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Georgia and a core faculty member of the Center for Geospatial Research, where he leads the Geoinformatics and AI Modeling (GAIM) Lab. He earned both his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Geography, with a minor in Computer Science, from The Pennsylvania State University, and
his B.Eng. in Remote Sensing and Geoinformatics from Wuhan University. Before joining UGA, he was a Machine Learning Scientist at the Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, and then an Assistant Professor in the School of Integrated Sciences at James Madison University.

His research builds accurate, reliable, and trustworthy machine learning models for environmental and Earth sciences, with an emphasis on quantifying uncertainty in multi-source data, including remote sensing, model simulations, and ground observations, and in hybrid dynamical–machine learning models. This work supports extreme event prediction and water resource management in the Southeast and the western United States.
